What3Words Smart Phone App for Emergencies

Those of you who attended our AGM will remember that we had an excellent talk about Fire Safety delivered by Julie Sprengett a Fire Officer with the Herts Fire Brigade.

Julie mentioned that the Emergency Services are finding that a free mobile (IOS or Android but do you need a smart phone to use the App) or online App, “what3words” is a really simple way to talk about location.

What3words has divided the world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares and assigned each one a unique 3 word address. It means anyone can accurately find any location and share it more quickly, easily and with less ambiguity than any other system.

What3words is particularly useful where street addresses don’t exist and provides a level of specificity when they are not accurate enough.  So, potentially of relevance and use to horse-riders in an emergency situation when out hacking in the countryside.  EBA Ride Organisers will be trialling the use of the App at our Rides this year – although hopefully we won’t need to use it!  We thought we would share it as it is also of use when out hacking generally.  You can find more information via https://what3words.com.
